• The Pilgrimage

In the heat of summer, a journey begins towards the renewal of autumn, bringing the nourishment of rain and new beginnings.

As a community, we make a pilgrimage through this season, following in the ways of our ancestors, who would travel on foot to their sacred centre.

Journey with Yelala from the reflective month of Elul to the watery pilgrimage festival of Sukkot, with some important stops for Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) and Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) along the way.

    | BOOKING CLOSED|
For our ancestors, the journey towards the New Year and Yom Kippur was a whole season of internal and even external pilgrimage, the month beforehand peppered with grave-visiting, ritual candle-making, deep-night devotion, even full moon rituals by the sea. How can we learn from the rhythm of Elul? Join Yelala as we find old-new ways to walk the path towards the turn of the seasons.

    |BOOKING CLOSED |
As the darkness rolls in and the stars fill the sky, join us for an evening of meditation and soulful singing to bid farewell to Shabbat, and to turn our hearts towards the New Year. Through music and reflection, we will prepare ourselves in body and spirit for the season of renewal. Our song circle will include havdalah (ritual to conclude the Sabbath), so if you’d like to bring a candle (braided or otherwise), a celebratory beverage and some spices, you’re invited to do so.

    FOOD FOR A GOOD OMEN:
    A ROSH HASHANAH SEDER

    Zoom | 8 September 2021 | 19:00-20:30 BST | £10/15/20

    |BOOKING CLOSED|
According to Sephardic tradition, seders aren’t just for Passover - there’s one for Rosh Hashanah, too! Join us for an evening of symbolic foods, storytelling and song to celebrate the New Year and invite in as much goodness as possible through our taste-buds and bellies. More details about what foods to gather will be sent out closer to the time.

ALL THE VOWS, ALL THE SOULS:
    KOL NIDREI & YIZKOR

    Zoom | 15 September 2021 | 20:00-21:30 BST | £10/15/20

    |BOOKING CLOSED|
On Yom Kippur, we are present with our own souls and the souls of those who have gone before us. Through song and meditation, we will honour and celebrate our humanity, our fallibility and our deep capacity for change. We will carve out sacred moments to remember our beloved dead, who are so close to us at this time of year...

Our sages said: “Anyone who has never seen the rejoicing at the place of [water] drawing, has never seen rejoicing in all their days!” In other words, there ain’t no party like a Simchat Beit HaShoeva party, the wild festival of fire and water that convened during the autumnal celebration of Sukkot. Join us to celebrate this ancient earth-centred, elemental pilgrimage festival, with joy and music, with earth, air, water and fire (safely, we promise. Well... our ancestors did dance with torches in the Temple courtyard, but we don’t recommend trying this at home).
